You may not realize it, but you can remove silver tarnish with baking soda.  While there may not be an official baking soda silver cleaner on the market yet, you can clean silver using baking soda right off your pantry shelf.  Just remember when cleaning sterling silver with baking soda that you must be firm, but gentle.  Read on now for my best advice on silver cleaning with baking soda.

Steps For Cleaning Sterling Silver With Baking Soda

Step 1: If you want to remove silver tarnish with baking soda, start by dipping the item in question in water.  Then dip it in the baking soda and begin to polish it.  As I said above, you must remember to use only enough pressure to clean silver using baking soda.  If you are too rough you risk scratching the piece.

Alternate Step 1: If your silver is not badly tarnished, you may be able to get away with dipping it in a strong solution of 1/2 cup baking soda to one quart water.  Take the item out, shake off the excess solution and polish it with a soft cloth.  Then go on to Step 2.

Step 2: Rinse the item well and shake the excess water off.  Then use a soft cloth to polish the item to a high shine.  If you find that cleaning sterling silver with baking soda was insufficient to remove all the tarnish, you can repeat Steps 1 and 2 again.  If this doesn’t work, you should probably give up on using a baking soda silver cleaner and go on to something more powerful.

Even if you find it takes a little extra effort, silver cleaning with baking soda is still worth it.  Not only does it protect the environment from harsh chemicals, but when you clean silver using baking soda you don’t have to worry about any nasty residue going into your family’s food.
