First, let me say that when I am talking about how to wash curtains, I mean simply, usually unlined, fabric window treatments. I do not mean drapes, which usually must be dry cleaned. Washing a curtain was once a chore reserved for the great spring cleaning ritual. That is because it was once considered impossible to wash curtains without wrinkles covering the fabric. Today, however, washing window curtains is as easy as washing anything else. Of course, I do have a few pointers on washing curtains without wrinkling them.

Step 1: How To Wash Curtains

The key to washing curtains without wrinkling them lies in making sure they have plenty of room in the washer and dryer to move around. Therefore, always use the large load setting and never fill the machine more than half full. Also, when you start the machine, set a timer for thirty minutes to remind you to unload it as soon as it finishes washing.

Step 2: Drying a Washed Curtain Without Wrinkles

As soon as your washer stops spinning, move you curtains to the dryer. Then set the dryer timer for 45 minutes and another timer, which you will be able to hear, for 30 minutes. When the timer goes off, take the still damp curtains out of the dryer and immediately hang them back in your windows. This will allow them to dry in place and should prevent wrinkling.

If, when you hang them up, your damp curtains look a little wrinkled, try adding some weight to the bottom each by slipping a broom handle or yardstick through the bottom hem. This should keep the curtain taut while it dries and remove any remaining wrinkles. When the curtain is dry, remove the stick and admire your handwork with washing window curtains. Then call your mom and tell her washing a curtain isn’t such a big deal after all.
